About This Project
Where the Ancient Text Meets the Archaeological Record
Scripture & History exists to place the Bible in its full historical, literary, and archaeological context — so that readers encounter the text not as an abstraction, but as a living document rooted in real places, real events, and real people.
Our Mission
The Bible was not written in a vacuum. Every book, every passage, every verse emerged from a specific historical moment — a particular culture, language, geography, and set of circumstances that shaped how it was written and how it was first heard.
Scripture & History is built on the conviction that understanding that context does not diminish the text — it illuminates it. When we know that the Exodus account echoes and subverts the Enuma Elish, that the Abrahamic covenant follows the structure of Hittite suzerainty treaties, that Isaiah 53 was preserved intact in the Dead Sea Scrolls a century before Christ, the words of Scripture come alive with a depth that surface reading cannot reach.
Our goal is to make that depth accessible — to students, teachers, pastors, and curious readers who want to take the Bible seriously as both a theological document and a historical one.
"The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God endures forever."
— Isaiah 40:8
Editorial Approach
Primary Sources First
Every historical claim on this site is traceable to primary sources — ancient texts, inscriptions, and archaeological reports. We cite the Cyrus Cylinder, the Tel Dan Stele, the Pilate Stone, and the Dead Sea Scrolls not as curiosities but as evidence that the biblical narrative is embedded in recoverable history.
Scholarly Rigor, Accessible Language
We draw on the work of leading biblical scholars, archaeologists, and historians — but we write for readers, not specialists. Technical terms are explained when introduced. Footnotes are replaced with contextual notes that travel with the text.
Canonical Breadth
We cover the full sweep of the biblical canon — from the creation narratives of Genesis to the apocalyptic visions of Revelation — tracing the theological threads that run through both Testaments. We treat the Old Testament as the essential foundation of the New, not as a prelude to be skipped.
Honest About Uncertainty
Where the historical record is incomplete or contested, we say so. The location of Mount Sinai, the precise route of the Exodus, the authorship of certain books — these are live scholarly debates, and we present the evidence and the range of scholarly opinion rather than false certainty.
Contributors
Scripture & History is a collaborative project drawing on expertise in biblical studies, ancient Near Eastern history, classical archaeology, and textual criticism.
Editorial Team
Content & Research
Our editorial team holds advanced degrees in biblical studies, ancient Near Eastern languages, and classical archaeology. All content is reviewed for historical accuracy and theological faithfulness before publication.
Archaeological Consultants
Field Research
We consult with field archaeologists working at sites across Israel, Jordan, Egypt, and Turkey — including excavations at Tel Megiddo, Khirbet Qeiyafa, and the Judean Desert caves where the Dead Sea Scrolls were discovered.
Textual Scholars
Manuscript Studies
Our textual contributors specialize in the transmission history of the biblical text — from the earliest Hebrew manuscripts and Septuagint traditions to the Masoretic Text and the New Testament papyri.
